Mi-Ah is already quite outgoing, but I still try to encourage it.  In this day and age, I feel it’s important to be assertive and outspoken.  Being able to speak and communicate in front of people is an extremely useful skill, no matter what you end up doing in life.  This story is also about the pleasure of making peeople happy.  Mi-Ah just loves this story too because it’s also about getting LOTS of attention!  Whenever I tell this story Mi-Ah always says she wants to put on a show for me too!

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful princess.  Her name was Princess Mi-Ah.  She lived in a castle on top of a hill.  The hill was covered with flowers.  Princess Mi-Ah loves flowers. Read the rest of this entry »

Like a lot of toddlers, Mi-Ah doesn’t quite get the sharing thing yet unless basicaly forced to by an adult.  I developed this story to try to teach her the benefits of sharing.  Well, we’re not quite there yet in terms of her voluntarily sharing, but she loves the ending where Princess Mi-Ah finally gets to play with the other children.

Okay, the last Princess Mi-Ah and not listening story was a flop.  The message did not hit home whatsoever.  So I decided to make the ‘pain’ associated with learning the lesson here even stronger.  She told me liked this version even better!

In this story, you will also meet ‘Prince Boerie’ (pronounced – ‘boo-ree’).  ’Boerie’ is I-An’s nickname.  When I-An was born, Mi-Ah could not pronounce ‘broertje’ (sounds like broor-chuh), which is Dutch for little brother, but instead said ‘boertje’ without the first ‘r’ (which means ‘little farmer’ in Dutch).  We then developed derivations of this ‘Boerie’, ‘Boerio’, ‘Boer’.

One day Mi-Ah was driving me crazy by not listening to me at several moments.  Well, she does this most days, actually!  I thought it a good idea to teach her that when you do bad things like not listening, then bad things can also happen to you.

After the Princess does something bad, I ask her, “Did Princess Mi-Ah do a bad thing or a good thing?” to reinforce the message.

Each story begins with this….

Once upon a time, there was a little princess, and her name was Mi-Ah (I usually pause here so she can say her name out loud because she knows it’s coming).  Princess Mi-Ah lived in a castle on top of a hill.  The hill was covered with flowers.  Princess Mi-Ah loves flowers. Children’s stories that teach

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Our daughter, Mi-Ah, currently around 3, is a very strong-headed, energetic girl.  This is a nice way of waying she doesn’t want to friggin’ listen to us!  I’ve been reading books, reading online and talking to other parents about ways to get their kids to listen.  Well, if you are a parent, you already know there is simply no one right answer.  No one size fits all.  So what to do?  Read the rest of this entry »
